LIBRARY SERVICES


A) CIRCULATION SERVICES

Membership Registration
The library management will register all UTHM students and staff as library members. New students and staff are advised to check their account through Library Portal. Users who have not yet registered as library member, must do so at Circulation Counter. Borrowing eligibility for each member will be determined according to the patron category.

Password Registration
After having been registered as library users, you must register password to enable access to the account, change password, do renewal, check fines, post suggestions and make online reservation. Password registration can be done at the Circulation Counter by fulfilling the registration form.

Borrowing and returning
Borrowing of library materials can be done at the Circulation Counter or by using the Self-Check Out Machine. Users are required to bring their Student/Staff Card when dealing at the counter or when using the machine. Users are prohibited from using other user’s card. Users will be given a Borrowing Slip for each borrowing transaction. Users are strongly advised to check the due date on the Borrowing Slip or check through the Borrowing Record in their respective account in order to avoid fine for late return of library materials. The fines rate is as follows:

Returning of library materials can be done at the Circulation Counter. Users will be given a Returning Slip for each returning transaction. Users are advised to keep the Returning Slip until they check the Borrowing Record in their respective account and ensure that the record has been updated.

Reminder/Overdue Notice
A Reminder Notice will be sent to users through e-mail 2 days before the due date. This notice is sent to inform users of the due date and to remind them for loan renewal. If users fail to return the library materials before due date, the 1st Overdue Notice will be sent 1 day after the due date. If users still fail to return it, the 2nd Overdue Notice will be sent 7 days after due date and if users still fail to return, the 3rd Overdue Notice (final notice) will be sent 13 days after due date and their account will be temporarily suspended. Users are required to come to the library to return the library materials and to reactivate their account. Users are advised to check the due date on the Borrowing Slip or through the Borrowing Record in their respective account in order to avoid fine for late return of library materials.

Replacement of Lost Materials

If users found that the library materials that they had borrowed were lost, they are required to report at Circulation Counter immediately. Users will be given 1 month to search for the lost materials. If they still could not find it, they are required to replace the lost materials with the same materials or pay the price of the materials.

Replacement of Damaged Materials
If users found that the library materials that they had borrowed were damaged, they are required to report at Circulation Counter immediately. The librarians will estimate the amount of damage that should be paid by the user.

Renewal
Renewal can be done online through Borrowing Record in library’s user account. Users can only renew twice. No renewal is allowed if other users have made reservations for the same items. Online renewal can be done before the due date.

Reservation of Library Material
Library materials that have been borrowed by other users can be reserved at the Circulation Counter or through the Library Catalog. The reserved materials will be located at the Reservation Shelf (Circulation Counter) for 7 days after the materials are returned by the borrower. If the user who had reserved the materials did not turn up to collect the reserved materials until the period ends, the reservation will be cancelled, and the reserved materials will be located at the Open Shelf. Users are advised to check on the status of the materials that they had reserved through the Reservation Record in their respective account. Waiting List status means that the users are still on the waiting list, and Awaiting Collection status means that the reserved materials are already on the Reservation Shelf and users can collect them at the Circulation Counter.

Delivery Service
Delivery Services is provided for academic staff only, within campus area. This service covers reserved material that consists of open access books, audio-visuals and interlibrary loan materials. The titles requested for will be placed under user library account and will be sent to requester’s office upon his confirmation. Besides, user also can request for returning the materials borrowed through this service.



B) REFERENCE AND INFORMATION SERVICES

Reference Service
Library users who are looking for library materials for research purposes are advised to consult the librarian at the Customer Service Room. Users can discuss with the librarian to get some guidance on the information searching techniques based on the users’ needs. The librarian will identify the exact needs of the users before suggesting relevant information resources. Reference Service is opened to all users within library opening hours.

Information Skill Class
Information Skill Class is a guidance program specifically on library services and facilities usage. The librarian will conduct the class on a specified date in every semester. The discussion topics include materials searching techniques through the library catalogue and information searching through the online databases. By attending this class, users will be given the opportunity to apply the searching technique with guidance from the librarian.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Interlibrary Loan Service is a service that allows users to borrow library materials that are unavailable in UTHM Library but can be obtained from other local academic libraries and British Library. Reference materials that can be borrowed through this service are books, journal articles and conference proceedings and standards. The service is free of charge. The length of borrowing period is subject to the rules imposed by the supplying library. Users are required to fill in an ILL Application Form available at the Circulation Counter. Users will be informed about the status of the application through e-mail or telephone.

Selective Dissemination of Information
Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service that available at the library consists of Latest Journal Content Page and New Arrivals Listing Dissemination. The Latest Journal Contents Page Dissemination service is particularly for academic staff in which the selected digital journal content pages will be composed directly to the inbox of respective requesters’ e-mail. Whereas the New Arrivals Listing Dissemination service is provided to give alert or current awareness to the users by compiling and publishing the listing of new materials received. This listing is arranged by faculty and distributed to both students and staff.



LIBRARY FACILITIES

Library Catalog Terminal
Users can access the library catalog using Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) through terminals provided at each level. The OPAC enables users to search the bibliographic records and the status of library materials. Besides, users can also check their library’s account and digital repository collection using these terminals.[pic]

Locker
Users can keep personal things in the locker located near to the library main entrance. There are about 500 units of locker available on first come first serve basis.[pic]

Open Carrel
The library provides open carrels especially for users who want to study alone and need privacy. There are 100 units of open carrels located at each level.[pic]

Laptop Lock
It is provided to keep users’ laptop save and secured. Those who need to leave their laptop unattended in library are advised to use this facility. The request can be made at Circulation Counter, Level 1.

Wi-Fi Access
The entire library building is equipped with wireless internet access network which is known as Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity). Those who are with laptop or notebook wishing to access must first register with university Wi-Fi provider (Information Technology Centre).

Self Check Out Machine
This is a self-service machine whereby users do not have to queue up at the Circulation Counter to borrow Open Access books. These machines are located at each level. Only users who have already registered their password can use these machines.

Photocopy Machine
User can use the machine located at Customer Service Room. This facility is a self- service concept machine. The prepaid card can be bought at a price of RM10.00 at library main counter. A copy of A4 size is charged at RM0.05. Photocopy is subject to Copyright Act 1987.

Iqra’ Room
The library provides 100 units of individual carrel rooms that known as Iqra’ Room. These rooms are located at Level 2 and 4 and meant for those who want more privacy. Network point and electric socket are provided in this room.[pic]

Hikmah and Eksplorasi Room
The library has 40 rooms for discussion and study groups. These rooms are known as Hikmah and Eksplorasi Room. Hikmah Room can accommodate up to 6 users per session, whereas Eksplorasi Room can accommodate up to 10 users per session. Network point and electric socket are provided in this room. Reservation can be made at the Circulation Counter, Level 1.

Seminar Room
There are 2 seminar rooms located at Level 3 which are equipped with a LCD projector and white screen. Each room can accommodate up to 80 users at one time. Reservation can be made at the Circulation Counter, Level 1.[pic]

Information Searching Room
Users can use 60 unit of computers provided in the room which is located at Level 2, to access the online databases, e-journals, e-books and library catalog. Users also can view journals, proceeding papers, standards and patents in CD format in which are located in this room. Internet searching is allowed for research purposes only. This room is also equipped with laser printers. The charge of A4 size printing is RM0.20 for black & white and RM0.50 for color.[pic]

Post Graduate Room
The room is mainly for post graduate students. It is located at Level 3 and equipped with carrels, electric socket and network point. It can accommodate up to 100 users at one time.

Customer Service Room
The library has 2 customer service rooms located at Level 1 near the Circulation Counter. These rooms provide photocopy and reference services. Librarian on duty will assist users in their information searching.

24 Hours Reading Room
This room is located next to library entrance at Level 1 which is equipped with study tables, electric sockets and wireless internet access. The room can accommodate up to 300 users at one time.[pic]

Journal Room
This room places printed journals collection subscribed by the library. It is located at Level 3 and can accommodate up to 50 users at one time. Journals are only for internal reading. Users are not allowed to bring out the journals.

Magazine Room
This room places magazines collection and daily newspapers subscribed by the library. It is located at Level 1 and can accommodate up to 50 users at one time. Magazines and newspaper are only for internal reading. These newspapers include Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian, Harian Metro, New Straits Times, The Star, Nanyang Siang Pau, Sin Chew Daily and Tamil Nesan.

Closed Reference Room
This room places special and reference collection. It is located at Level 1 and can accommodate up to 140 users at one time.

Auditorium
The Library has an auditorium at Level 3 which is equipped with a LCD projector and white screen. It can be used for screening of videos and films to facilitate learning and teaching. It can accommodate up to 150 users at one time. Reservation can be made at the Circulation Counter, Level 1.[pic]

Open Reading Area
Open Reading Area is located at each level and equipped with 2-4 seated tables and carrels. Electric socket and network point are also provided at certain area.[pic]

Gallery and Exhibition Area
Gallery and exhibition area are located at Level 1, next to the Circulation Counter. User can gain information and knowledge about library facilities and services, general knowledge and current issues by visiting this area.[pic]

Interactive Library Information Kiosk
Interactive Library Information Kiosk is a touch screen directory that provides user with a variety of information such as location directories, staff directory, book directory, library facilities & services and tourism guides. It is located at Level 1.[pic]

Digital Signage & Information
Digital Signage & Information is a computer based terminal or display that is used to provide general information about library. It is located at main entrance, Level 1.
